Interactive log in requires an account. Part of the basic account structure is the assignment of a default device and directory (home directory). Within that home directory, a common file that is executed during log in is the LOGIN.COM command procedure. This course discusses the basics of directories and files within OpenVMS and the interaction with Record Management Services (RMS).

Among the important OpenVMS features are the concepts of file types and their default extensions and the specific types of file organization commonly used. Exhaustive treatment of these topics is beyond the scope of this course. This course provides the fundamental notions necessary for you to work with files in OpenVMS. Other courses discuss additional details of operations with files.

The course also introduces the concept of On Disk Structure (ODS) formats and the method of basic file protections OpenVMS uses.
