Submitting Jobs to Print and Batch Queues
Concepts
A queue is basically a line, much like the teller lines at a bank. When you want to print a file or run a program non-interactively, you make a request for a job to be placed in one of the print or batch queues on the system. Another way to think of the queue is as a list of who is in the line and what they want done. Though there are standard default queues of both types, the defaults are not mandatory. Users must look at the queues on a system to know what queues exist. OpenVMS uses a process called the QUEUE_MANAGER, which controls both print and batch queues. The full scope of the queuing mechanisms goes beyond this course. In this module, the discussion references the Queue Manager and takes it to entail other related processes and mechanisms.
