Managing Network Connectivity
Concepts
For many years OpenVMS provided networking services through the proprietary suite of DECnet protocols. In recent years, emphasis shifted to the TCP/IP protocol suite implemented in TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS. Internet access and interoperability with other operating systems, especially UNIX, added other dimensions to network configuration and connectivity requirements. Robust networking remains an OpenVMS strength, including continued availability of the DECnet software. This module focuses on TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS. System managers, even if they are not network administrators, must understand the fundamentals of network integration on OpenVMS. Appendix A provides an overview of DECnet and the Local Area Transport (LAT) protocols as well.
