| Introduction to OpenVMS |
This course provides the essential concepts and skills new OpenVMS users require to work competently with the operating system. The course couples core ideas with hands-on practice to step students through procedures and practices oriented around their day to day use of OpenVMS facilities and services.
Students learn the fundamental concepts that underlie the operating system and work each day with additional practical knowledge of structures, commands and activities involved in working with OpenVMS. The course also presents a solid beginning in DCL programming to enable students to use DCL scripts to accomplish programmable tasks.

- Discuss the background from which today’s
OpenVMS emerged, including what the different architectures
imply
- Explain the role of virtual memory in the operating
system
- Describe how networking and clustering contribute
to the configuration options with OpenVMS
- Describe some of the main features of OpenVMS
- Describe and use an OpenVMS account
- Describe the basic syntax of DCL commands and their
interactive use
- Implement symbol definitions, including the use
of DCL commands and symbols in the LOGIN.COM file
- Describe the basic features of OpenVMS processes
and the programs users execute
- Describe On Disk Structure and RMS, and file specifications
- Create and use subdirectories and files
- Describe briefly what an ACL does
- Use the EVE editor to create text files
- Explain the basic utility of logical names and
use logical names and logical name tables.
- Plan and organize their file maintenance tasks
and perform basic operations on files (copy, delete,
sort…)
- Distinguish between and use print and batch queues
- Describe briefly the characteristics of networks
and internets
- Perform remote log in and other applicable operations
using DECnet, TCP/IP or LAT
- Use OpenVMS Mail
- Communicate with operators using the REQUEST command
- Design a basic algorithm to solve a computing problem
- Structure a command procedure for clarity and maintainability
- Use basic DCL programming syntax
- Employ symbols, logical names, and lexical functions
in command procedures
